Matthew Collins — Photography

Matthew Collins, a longtime wrangler at the Darwin, is a conservation professional and Masters’ candidate in the Human Dimensions of Natural Resources at Colorado State University with a background in large-landscape conservation and human-carnivore conflict prevention. Working with the CSU Center for Human-Carnivore Coexistence, he is interested in the values, practices, and tools that enable communities to coexist with large carnivores in the American West. As a self trained photographer, Matt hopes his work inspires others to appreciate the sanctity of open space, the importance of functioning ecosystems, and the intrinsic value of wildlife and wild spaces.

Darby Hertel — Visual Art

I’ve grown up in the Mountain West moving around between Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon and Colorado. I’ve worked at the Darwin Ranch and Ishawooa Mesa Ranch for many years. They both hold a very special place in my heart and play a prominent role in my art practice. I graduated from Colorado State University in the Spring of 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Visual Studies and a minor in Horticulture. I have concentrated my practice in drawing but also do printmaking, painting, and fiber work.

I often look to memories and photos from my time at the Darwin or Ishawooa when creating artwork. My drawing titled “Thelma and Louise” is inspired from my first solo packing expedition at the Darwin in summer 2020 when I packed my Dad into his hunting camp over by Strawberry Butte.

Sara Reed - Painter & Printmaker

I was born and raised in Cody, Wyoming to a family of farmers and ranchers, I lived and loved the outdoors. Diving into oil paints in High school I was nominated for the Wyoming High School Congressional art award after producing a series of up-close portraits. From there, I went off to college and graduated with a degree in Botany and Environmental and Natural Resources, with a minor in Painting. Although art wasn't my major, I spent most of my time in the studio painting and printmaking.

Working at the Darwin for the last three summers has inspired my recent work which centers around western landscapes and the organisms it’s comprised of.
