~ Upper Falls Wilderness Camp ~
If you wish to enjoy the beauty and solitude of the Gros Ventre Wilderness, but don't wish to be encumbered with lugging your gear or eating freeze-dried meals, then the Upper Falls Wilderness Camp may be your solution. Just a 2 ½ hour hike from the remote Darwin Ranch, or 4 hour hike from the end of the Gros Ventre Road, brings you to a large meadow with a magically beautiful waterfall at one end and a group of tents gathered in the forest at the other.
Your days are spent exploring, fishing, and enjoying the wilderness landscape. Then at twilight you gather around the campfire for drinks and appetizers while the camp cook prepares a delicious meal. After an evening of good food and friendly conversation everyone is ready to retire to large two person tents with comfy cots, foam mattresses, and warm sleeping bags. In the morning you awake to the sounds of a crackling fire and the smell of coffee in the air. As a hot breakfast is served, plans for the day are discussed. This is luxury camping at its best, especially for those who love to hike unencumbered in a wild and beautiful outdoor setting. Leave it to Nature to soothe the soul.
For those starting from the Ranch, the hike to Upper Falls takes about two and a half hours at a moderate pace. The trail is easy to follow and mostly flat, with a total elevation gain of only 400 feet. Your personal gear will be packed in along with the necessary food and other supplies, so it's easy to include your favorite wine or a bottle of champagne to celebrate the occasion.
For hikers coming from Jackson Hole, a highly scenic alternative that minimizes highway travel is to take the dirt road up the Gros Ventre River east of Kelly. The drive to the Cow Creek trailhead is usually about an hour and a half from the Jackson town square, followed by a hike of about four hours. The walking distance is approximately 8 miles, including a 1,800 foot climb to a pass at 9,400 feet before dropping down to Upper Falls. Make sure you have our detailed driving and hiking instructions before setting out.
