The Darwin Ranch

HIKING

Many of our guests enjoy hiking, and some never ride at all. Possible hikes range from moderate strolls along well marked trails to vigorous, cross-country treks off of trails altogether. Whatever your preference, the landscape is varied enough and scenic enough to suit a wide variety of tastes. Generally we do not provide guides for hiking expeditions.

Mountain ClimbingCLIMBING

The Gros Ventre Range where the Ranch is located has little technical climbing to offer, mostly because the rock is sedimentary in origin and crumbles too easily. But there are simple routes up nearly all the peaks and several very pleasant ascents can be made in a single day from the Ranch without much difficulty. There are also the usual opportunities for backpacking off the trails in the high country. Attractive combinations of horseback riding and easy climbing can be worked out with competent guides available from the Ranch.

RAFTING

The Gros Ventre River reaches its height from mid-June to early July. Walking upstream and floating down to the Ranch in two person rubber rafts is a relaxing way to spend an hour or two and to see the valley from a different angle. If this activity is appealing you should buy an inexpensive two person raft and life preservers for your own use.
